Hanging Lake

Interstate 70 winds its way through the mountains and canyons between Denver and Grand Junction, Colorado.  Just outside Glenwood Springs, hikers can pull off the highway and walk up to Hanging Lake and Spouting Rock.  The trail follows Dead Horse Creek up to Hanging Lake, which is composed of travertine, a rock formed from the dissolution and deposition of nearby limestone formations.  The lake is particularly fragile because oils from human skin can hasten the chemical erosion of the travertine.
