Watchtower Overlook and Hermits Rest

After returning to Arizona from Wyoming in August, I took a field trip with a few other geologists to the Grand Canyon. The weekend was stormy and cloudy throughout Arizona, and lightning and heavy rain halted our visit to an extinct volcano and lava flows outside Flagstaff. I took the first panorama in the evening at Watchtower Overlook when the rain clouds were clearing off. The next morning, I hiked down Hermits Rest trail. I think we only saw two or three other people all day, and the cool, overcast weather was perfect for a relaxed walk and photographs. I took the second panorama along the trail in a side canyon where the Park Service had used sandstone blocks to make stairs.
